Preparing for motherhood can be exciting and overwhelming all at once but thankfully there are parents out there who have done it already and can offer much needed advice for first time moms.

Your Newborn Nappy Bag Checklist

When you are out and about, it’s crucial that you go prepared. However, it’s just as important to not over-prepare because you want to travel as lightly as possible.

But before we start talking about what must go into a nappy bag, we first need to start with how to choose the right bag:

  • Size – You will want to choose a bag that is big enough to store everything you need plus a little more
  • Versatile – Look for a bag that both you and your partner are comfortable with carrying around, and perhaps one that can be used as either a backpack or a satchel
  • Easy to clean – Because spillages are real, and you want something that you can wipe clean when you are nowhere near a basin or washing machine
  • Different pockets – Nappy bags with different pockets will help you keep things organized. Some of these pockets may even be insulated so you can keep a prepared bottle cold
  • Durability – You will need to use this nappy bag for many years to come. Be sure to choose one that is well-made and will last you until you no longer need it

What to Pack in a Nappy Bag

Apart from the obvious (nappies) there is a lot more that should be packed into your nappy bag:

  • Nappies – The general rule of thumb is on nappy for every two hours for a newborn. This will make sure that your little one stays clean and nappy rash is avoided
  • Wet wipes – Choose an eco-friendly option which is free of colours, alcohol, and scents
  • Blankies – Pack one blanket that can be used as a swaddle during naptimes and a cover for nursing times, and a second blanket or cloth for spit ups (this is when your baby has reflux)
  • Change of clothes – The truth is that anything can happen while you are out an about and a fresh change of clothing can be lifesaving
  • Disposable bags – For holding soiled nappies, blankets, and clothes. Try find an eco-friendly option to minimize plastic waste in the environment
  • Changing pad – You might not always have access to a changing table, so a changing pad can help you turn any appropriate surface into a changing station
  • Hat and sunscreen – Your baby’s skin is extremely delicate, and you should always have a hat and sunscreen at hand, even on a cloudy day
  • Hand sanitizer – This is essential for use after each nappy change. You might not have access to a public restroom with soap and water. Nappy changes can be unpredictable
  • Basic first aid kit – Pack a few plasters and some anti-bacterial ointment for bumps and scratches (especially when you have a boisterous toddler)
  • Your own essentials – Dedicate a compartment in your nappy bag for your own essentials like cellphone, car keys, and purse/wallet

As your baby grows up, their needs will change so you will need to adjust the contents of your nappy bag to suite these changing needs.

Additionally, be sure to restock your nappy bag every time you come home and make sure you have everything you need and enough of it. We know you are bound to be tired after your outing, but it’s always safer to restock as soon as you come home because you never know when you might need to leave in a rush.
