As the situation around the Coronavirus has escalated, all educational facilities, including ours, have been instructed to close our doors until the Easter weekend.

We fully support this decision as it can contribute massively towards the reduction of transmissions in our city and country.

However, we all still continue to bear the responsibility of taking every possible measure to protect our family from this infectious virus.

Corona Safety Tips for Children

There has been word that children are considered immune or, at the very least, resistant to COVID-19.

However, it’s important to be aware that there have been reported cases of adolescent infection. The difference is their resilience to the virus and what professionals assume to be their naturally stronger immune systems.

This generally means that children do not experience the infection in the same way adults or immunocompromised individuals do. In other words, their symptoms are far less severe and sometimes invisible.

Therefore, it’s still important to practice self-care during these times and to talk to your children about basic hygiene practices which can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The following are safety precautions that adults and children alike should be taking to minimise the risk of infection:

Wash Your Hands and Sanitise them Regularly

Especially after coming into contact with other children and/or unknown surfaces.

Cough into Your Elbow

Show your children how to cough and sneeze into the inside of their elbows and explain why coughing into their hands can encourage the spread of disease.

Don’t Touch Your Face

It’s much harder for children to be aware of not touching their faces, but we should still encourage this behaviour.

This is also why it’s important to make hand-washing or sanitising a frequent activity.

Social Distancing

Having schools and educational facilities close down for a period of time will encourage social distancing in children.

However, you will need to minimise interaction between your children and their friends until the situation is under control.

Children may act as carriers to the disease and just because they are not showing obvious signs or symptoms, it doesn’t mean that they are not carrying the virus.

Symptoms of Coronavirus

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are:

  • Coughing
  • Tight chest and difficulty breathing
  • Sudden onset of fever
  • Sore throat
