Benefits of Teaching Computer Literacy in Young Children

As part of our extra mural activity program for our children aged 3 years to Grade R, we offer computer lessons, to cover their different stages of digital literacy.

Digital literacy, which used to be known as computer literacy, is one of the most important skills for a child to learn from a young age.

Importance of Digital Literacy in Education

As the age of technology has rapidly advanced, so has the need for individuals to know how to use all things digital.

A few years ago, all we had to worry about was learning how to use a computer and the few basic programs that came with them. Today, we have countless digital devices all of which require a fundamental understanding of technology.

Our extra mural computer lessons aim to teach children how to become digitally literate because we believe that this opens many occupational doors later on in life.

Here are 3 of the most important benefits of computers in early childhood education:

Critical Thinking Skills are Improved

Using computers requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As technology continues to advance, there is always the need to troubleshoot certain issues, install and setup programmes or applications, and to keep up with ongoing updates.

Often these issues need to be navigated with little to no guidance and so understanding how computers and programs work is crucial for keeping up with the ever-changing world of technology.

It Empowers Children

When children know how to use a computer, they also know how to look for valuable information which they find interesting.

This means that children can expand their knowledge on topics which they find interesting and not just topics that are taught in class at school. This is extremely empowering as it fosters curiosity and independence.

However, it’s important to ensure that your child only has access to age-appropriate information or is reasonably supervised when not in a formal learning environment.

More Career Opportunities

Almost every job requires a level of digital literacy. Some of the highest paying jobs are ones in the field of technology.

Therefore, when a child’s digital literacy is nurtured from a young but appropriate age, their horizons are much broader in terms of job opportunities.
